Skincare and Facials by Decade: How our skin needs change in your 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond.
I’ll bet we have all complained about aging at some point in our lives, whether it be about the changes with our body, the aches, the energy and even our appearance. Aging is a gift, and while we may have some physical or mental changes over time, it's a privilege. When it comes to our skin and appearance, some people wish to age gracefully while still protecting their skin and treating it kindly. Some people want to take it more seriously and be as preventative as possible; that may include more steps, more product and even procedures. Whichever you decide here is a guide on how our skin changes and which facials or treatments are appropriate through each decade:
Our 20s: Prevention & Balance. Our skin at this time is still very youthful, collagen hasn’t begun to deplete and the overall tone should be even. Even if you are exposing your skin to the sun now, damage or hyperpigmentation may be minimal. If skin is generally normal (without acne or conditions) the key is to protect with SPF daily and hydrate. Routines should be fairly simple including 1-2 cleansers, a hydrating toner or serum and a morning and evening moisturizer and of course SPF. Starting facials in your 20’s is a great preventive measure. Treatments including:
Custom or European style facials are perfect for basic cleansing, exfoliation, massage/relaxation, masking and moisturising.
Microdermabrasion facials are great for exfoliation, the gentle abrasive polishing action helps to slough off surface dead skin.
Dermaplaning is great for occasional treatments at this age; especially before a special event, say wedding. Unless you experience thicker, unwanted facial hair(vellus hair), it's not necessary to have this treatment regularly at this age since your skin should be adequately hydrated with homecare.
Our 30’s: Early Correction & Glow. We start seeing some changes in our skin during this decade. Fine lines and pigment start to appear and collagen begins to dip. We still want to focus on hydration but homecare will start to include some corrective products such as a retinol or brightening serums, perhaps a vitamin c serum. Appropriate treatments include:
Any of the above mentioned
Chemical peels to turn over cells more effectively and to brighten and tighten skin
Enhanced hydration facials
Our 40’s: Firmness & Renewal. This decade we are still looking gorgeous and vibrant. While we may have signs of fine to medium wrinkles, dehydration and visible pigmentation; we must have positive self-confidence. Now since you’ve been diligent with your SPF, hydration and corrective serums then hopefully you have minimal of the aforementioned aging signs. However, it's time to add in an eye cream, incorporate peptides and maybe even invest in some home devices such as LED and/or microcurrent. Invest in monthly skin treatments such as:
Microneedling to stimulate collagen and reduce pigmentation. This treatment will firm and minimize lines.
Chemical peels - targeted peels can brighten up the skin, increase hydration and even skin tone.
Oxygen facials provide life to our cells - referred to as the “red carpet of facials” help reduce blotchiness, and clear adult acne.
Our 50’s and beyond: Repair & Support. Even with all our efforts of protection, time has a way of sneaking up. You may notice thinner skin, more sensitivity, and slower healing. It’s important to prioritize strengthening your barrier, boosting circulation, and supporting collagen. Reduce your retinol strength, and active ingredients. Avoid heavy treatments like chemical peels - or at least not as often. Avoid abrasive treatments such as microdermabrasion - these could be too harsh on thinning skin. Seek out these types of treatments:
Custom facials that will treat your unique skin
LED facials that will stimulate collage, brighten the skins without any downtime
Alternative chemical peels that will get the cells turning over while still providing benefits.
Incorporate lymph drainage into your facials to help circulation and blood flow.
